Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Florida

The 2008 issue of Ha Tanin, the Center's annual newsletter, is finally finished! We put many hours of hard work into this issue and it shows. Thanks to everyone who contributed. The printed version won't go out for another couple of weeks, but a Flash version is available here.

SHIFT, the Center's annual Holocaust Institute takes place June 16 – 20, 2008. Visit the SHIFT page for more information and instructions for registering.

Proceedings from the conference "The Ister," under the title The Danube: Hoelderlin, Heidegger, 'the jews,' and the Destiny of Europe have been published by Artmargins. The conference was organized last March by the Center for Jewish Studies, and co-sponsored by the Center for European Studies and Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies at UF. Artmargins is the leading journal in art, film and media, covering the countries of "East and Central" Europe, published at the University of California at Santa Barbara.

Beth Pagel of Gainesville has graciously donated a fascinating assortment of vintage Hebrew books to the Center. Among them is a beautifully illustrated children's book of the Hebrew alphabet titled Aleph-bet. This happens to be a very rare book and will be kept in the Special Collections of the Price Library of Judaica. A Flash version of this book has been made available for all to enjoy here.
